One Week Down, Two More Weeks to Go
We’re halfway through Chinook Blast 2024, so if you haven’t come out yet, now’s the time!
Here’s what you can see, do, and eat this weekend.
Celebrate the Year of the Dragon
On Friday, February 9, you can ring in the Lunar New Year at several events across Calgary.
At 5:20 pm, come by the Central Library for Glow Fusion Experience to see a mix of technology, traditional regalia, and circus arts.
Immediately after, make your way to Olympic Plaza for Lunar New Year Performances to take in cultural dances and a lantern parade.
Throughout the entire weekend, check out performances, art, calligraphy writing, lantern-making, and more at ImaginAsian: Asian Night Market.
Take to the Outdoors
Snow Rodeo – Snowboard Halfpipe World Cup brings the world’s best snowboarders to Winsport’s Canada Olympic Park on Friday, February 9, and Saturday, February 10. Saturday night boarders will drop in under the lights, while the Redbull DJs jam out, and the beer garden rocks on.
Drag on Ice is putting on a stunning star-studded performance at the Prince’s Island Park Lagoon on Saturday, February 10. Watch from the stands or strap on your skates and join the action.
If those weren’t enough to draw you outside, maybe the 9th Annual Great Canadian Calgary Kilt Skate in Olympic Plaza on Sunday, February 11, will entice you. Whether you’re Scottish or not, kilts and tartans are encouraged (though not mandatory).
Fill your belly
Chinook Blast is warming up the city and turning snow to slush–a Peach Cider Bellini Slushy, to be precise. Drop into Cold Garden to try the drink created in our honour.
If that doesn’t have you dreaming of warmer days, the “Berbon Peach” old-fashioned-style cocktail at Bridgeland Distillery will (only available in February).
After a cocktail, find your new favourite eatery with Taste the City. Pick your neighbourhood and day of the week and set out on this self-guided culinary tour.
Let the Music Move You
What’s a fully improvised concert? Let One Big JAMam show you on February 9 at Olympic Plaza.
Four Winds is back with another showcase at Olympic Plaza on February 10 with a hip-hop performance by Toosick, powwow dances by the Tootoosis Crew, and live drums by Sage Scabbyrobe.
Arts Commons is hosting ticketed musical performances across the city, bringing you artists from Botswana, Nigeria, Suriname, Canada, and more, with a range of genres and styles.
Looking for more concerts? Find a variety of artists performing as part of BIG Winter Classic across the city. Buy individual tickets, day passes, or a pass for the whole weekend.
Should your music cup still not be full, you can make your way to the Trailer Stage at Stephen Ave for free shows by DJ MollyFi, Hunter & The Kill, and Sargeant X Comrade.
