About

Did you know that Colombia’s hippos are all descendants of three females and one male illegally imported by drug-cartel leader Pablo Escobar? After he died in 1993, the hippos escaped from his estate and established themselves in the Magdalena River. Conservationists estimate that there are over 200 living in Columbia today.

Introducing Hippoposthumous, a surprisingly clever young hippo residing in the lush landscapes of Colombia. In this thought-provoking journey, our endearing hippo grapples with the profound realization of their impact on the environment, a poignant moment of reckoning that forces them to confront their role in the ongoing ecological challenges.

Join us for a transformative odyssey, navigating through stages of deflection, introspection, and even breaking into catchy show tunes.

Hippoposthumous isn’t just a performance; it’s an immersive, site-specific musical experience that brings to life the very real and pressing issue of the invasive hippo population in Colombia. Through captivating storytelling, it explores the fascinating intersection of invasive species and the human narrative.

More
Bio

Originally founded in 2019 by Logan Robins, Linda Meian, and Zach Levin- The Unnatural Disaster Theatre Company has become one of Nova Scotia’s freshest and most groundbreaking indie theatre makers. With a deeply rooted focus on the environment and social justice (both on and off stage)- this eclectic collective of artists strives to produce meaningful work that can entertain, educate, and make an impact within their community.

Since their inception, The Unnatural Disaster Theatre Company has actively collaborated with more than 40 local artists including playwrights, puppeteers, actors, musicians, choreographers, designers, and more! They have also worked closely to create theatre alongside outstanding organizations such as Shakespeare by the Sea, The Ecology Action Centre, and Halifax Regional Arts.

With a passion for music, puppetry, and devised creation- the company has crafted and shared five original productions since their inception and have strived with each to make a tangible positive impact! This has included raising money and awareness for charitable organisations related to the projects- such as Oxfam Canada (Support for Covid-19 relief in India), African Wildlife Foundation (for Hippo conservation), and the Bryony House (a local women’s shelter in Halifax).

Most recently The Unnatural Disaster Theatre Company produced and performed the original site-specific musical, Hippoposthumous, written and directed by Logan Robins, at the 2021 Halifax Fringe Festival. This production was certified as a ‘fringe hit’ and was one of the highest grossing shows of the festival. The life of Hippoposthumous is continuing to grow in exciting ways through a school tour and workshop series across the HRM in April 2022 and a professional maritime summer tour making a splash July-August 2022.
