About

The Confluence invites you to an evening of poetry and learning with Calgary’s only Black Poet Laureate, Wakefield Brewster. Listen to Brewster share poetry in honour of Black History Month and ask all your burning questions about his life, work and poetry in a Q&A session.

Event description courtesy of Wakefield Brewster:

In this solo event, Professional Poet & Spoken Word Artist Wakefield Brewster shall invite you into his “Wonderful Worlds of Words and Wellness”.

On this stretch of storytelling, you may travel through tales with him, and make landmark road stops of Poetry along the way.

After each selection, the call and response may ensue with the appreciated audience.

Questions (unquestionably) Ideas Beliefs Opinions Comments and Observations are welcomed and encouraged;

On all things Black History, Black Presently, Black to The Future;

Black Lyricism, Black Literature, Black Literacy;

Black Professionally, Black Publicly, Black Personally.

Typically, there has been a historical hesitation in the difficult conversations for the very simple fact that they are so – and so are we.

Da WordWizard invites you contribute to the Creative and Complicated Conversation; trip and trod through trials and tribulations, transparently; view vividly, viscerally, and vulnerably.

Black History is World History, it is your history, and everyday history.

Please attend, and go Black to the Past, Black to the Future.

Bio

In January 1999, Wakefield Brewster stepped onto his first stage as a poet and spoken word artist. Today, he is known as one of Canada’s most powerful professional performance poets.

A Black man raised in Toronto by parents from Barbados, he has resided in Calgary since 2006, and it is here where Wakefield has been able to truly flourish as a poet and as a person.

Wakefield has been published in several poetry anthologies and produced two professional recordings, alongside numerous titles and awards for his work, and in 2022 he was appointed Calgary’s 6th Poet Laureate.

Wakefield finds that, underneath many hats and many hoodies he wears, resides a most wonderful life.
